I have a similar problem. On my older G-Drive (USB 3.0), I know that the volume is corrupt. However, I cannot get it to be recognized by Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, or Drive Genius, to rebuild or reformat it. I am running a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.12.3. Is there any other method by which I might be able to get the drive rebuilt / reformatted. Furthermore, there are likelihoods that the Mac operating system crashes. Hence, the Mac cannot mount your hard drive. Solutions: 1. Kill Viruses. Based on the first reason above, you need to kill the potential viruses. Launch the anti-virus software on your Mac and then make it scan the disk or the entire Mac to remove viruses.
Hi there mlr99,
From what you describe it sounds like you are trying to install Lion on your newly installed HDD replacement but its not showing as a disk when you try to actually install Mac OS X. That indicates to me that the drive has not yet been formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled, so it is not ready for Lion to install onto it. This section of the following article will help you get that drive erased and formatted properly so you can continue with the installation:
